Joshua sent 2 spies into the city of Jericho to check out what lay ahead for the army. The king of Jericho hears that the spies are in the city and sends out searchers to find them. The two spies meet Rehab and she hides them in her home. When the searchers come she tells them that the spies left before the gates were closed and that they should go after them. Now Jericho, like many cities of its day, was within a large wall for protection. The wall was so large that some people’s homes were inside the wall! Rehab’s home was one of these.
After the searchers left, she brought the spies out of hiding and told them that she knew that God was going to give them the land and that everyone knew about the miracles God had performed on behalf of the Israelites. She told them that she wanted them to promise to save her and her family when they destroyed the city. The spies told her that if she kept their secret, they would save anyone inside her home. She was to mark her window with a red cord so the army would know where she was. Rehab agreed and then let them down outside the wall using rope through her window. The spies hid in the area around Jericho for 3 days until the searchers returned to the city. Then they returned and reported to Joshua. The spies later keep their word and save Rehab and her family when the Israelites destroy Jericho.
Even though Rehab was not an Israelite, she believed that their God was the true God. She know that He was powerful and that what He wanted to happen would happen. She helped His people in hopes of being saved. Even in the time when the Israelites were God’s only chosen people, He made a way for those who truly had faith in Him. Because Rehab believed in God and did her best to help His people, God saved her.
Have your children act out this story. Let them be the spies searching out the city, then hiding in Rehab’s house, then climbing down the wall and hiding in the area around Jericho. Remind them that God was with His people where ever they were.
