2 Samuel 16:15-17:14
Ahithophel was one of King David’s most respected advisors. Verse 16:23 says that the advice he gave to both David and Absalom was as if you had spoken directly to God. So his advice was definitely what you would want to follow. His leaving King David for Absalom was a serious blow to David. However, David sent his advisor, Hushai back to Jerusalem and he went to Absalom. Absalom asked Hushai why he came and he said he was to serve whoever the men of Israel selected as their leader. This convinced Absalom that Hushai was on his side, even though we know he was loyal to King David.
Ahithophel gave Absalom some advice about King David’s concubines, which would show that Absalom was now the leader and Absalom followed it. But then Ahithophel gave Absalom the advice to gather the men they had on hand and go after King David immediately and overthrow his men while they were tired. Absalom liked the idea but wanted to hear Hushai’s advice as well. Hushai advised him to wait until he had gathered all Israel together and go after David once David’s mighty men’s anger had cooled off. Absalom decided to listen to Hushai.
But why? Verse 17:14 says that the Lord had decided to defeat the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom! God can and will protect his people. Absalom was given good advice but God had him listen to the bad because God’s plan was for Absalom to be defeated! We can depend on God to work out his good will for us, regardless of how strong the opposition!!
How do you think Ahithophel felt when Absalom listened to Hushai instead of him? Has anyone ever taken someone else’s suggestion over yours? How did it feel? We need to remember that there is a reason for everything and maybe they are supposed to make a bad choice to learn a lesson. Try not to let it make you angry. Trust God in everything!
