1 Samuel 1:1-21
Hannah was the wife of Elkanah, who was a Levite. Elkanah also had another wife, Peninnah, who had many children. But Hannah did not have any children. Now today that would be sad but not horrific. Unfortunately in this time if a woman could not have a child she was considered cursed and usually avoided. Because Peninnah had children, she looked down on Hannah and often teased her. But Elkanah loved Hannah.
Every year Elkanah would take his family to Shiloh to offer sacrifices to the Lord. Elkanah would provide Peninnah and all her children a portion to sacrifice. But because he deeply loved Hannah, he would give her 2 portions as if she had a child as well. However, Peninnah teased Hannah and Hannah was so sad she cried. Elkanah was upset that she was crying and asked wasn’t he worth 10 sons? Now Hannah loved Elkanah, but she really wanted a son. So while at the worship place at Shiloh she found a quiet place and prayed. She told the Lord that if He would give her a son, then she would dedicate him back to the Lord and have him serve God all his days. Now Hannah was praying really hard and her lips were moving but the words were just in her heart. Unfortunately the high priest, Eli, saw her and thought she was doing bad things. He fussed at her, but she told him, “No, I am just really sad and really want God to answer my prayer.” Eli told her to go in peace and that he hoped God would answer her prayer. This made Hannah feel better. But the best part was by the next year Hannah had a baby boy!
When we seek the Lord’s will and ask in faith, God loves to answer our prayers. Hannah told God what she wanted and trusted He would provide and He did!!
Make a list of things you really want. Then look at the list and decide if anything on there is in conflict with God’s will. Take those off! Start praying and see what God does!
