Luke 2:5-25, 56-66
Elizabeth was the wife of Zechariah the priest and Luke 2:6 tells us she was faithful to walk in God’s laws. In her older age she was blessed to become not only a mother but the mother of John the Baptist who was to prepare the way for Jesus. She also had another honor in that she was a close relative of Mary, the mother of Jesus. When the angel announced to Mary that she would have the savior, the angel used Elizabeth as an example that nothing was impossible for God.
While Elizabeth was in her sixth month, Mary came to visit her. The Lord used Elizabeth to encourage Mary and to reassure her that what was happening was good and amazing. Mary spent 3 months with Elizabeth and I am sure that God used this mature woman of God to encourage and strengthen young Mary’s faith.
Then Elizabeth gave birth to her very own son, John. When the others tried to argue with her about his name she stood firm in what she knew God wanted. Then God gave them the miracle of Zechariah speaking again for confirmation. Elizabeth then began the task of raising John to follow after God. Because of her lifetime of faithfulness, God used Elizabeth to encourage and guide others to do great things for Him. May we be so faithful!
Part of what Elizabeth did was encouragement. Make a card or small gift to share with someone who may need encouragement or a smile today!
