1 Kings 13:1-10
When Jeroboam turned from God and built places for the people to worship idols, God sent a messenger to him. The messenger met Jeroboam at Bethel where Jeroboam had built an altar. The messenger predicted that a descendant of David, named Josiah, would destroy this altar. (This did happen about 300 years later.) The sign that God would do this was that the altar would split in two and the ashes would fall off.
When Jeroboam heard this, he reached out his hand and ordered the messenger be arrested. However, as he did so, his hand withered up!! Then the altar split apart. Jeroboam then asked the messenger to pray and ask God to heal his hand. The messenger prayed and Jeroboam’s hand was healed.
Jeroboam then invited the messenger to go home with him to have a meal and rest but the messenger refused. He said God had told him not to eat or drink anything while there. The messenger then returned home by a different route.
Like Jeroboam, God lets us know when we do wrong. Someone else may correct us like in this story or God may just remind us with His Spirit. But God always wants us to do right, so He lets us know when we are off the path. Whether or not we listen is up to us!
