2 Samuel 19:31-40
After the defeat of Absalom, David and his army began preparing to return to Jerusalem to take back over control of the nation of Israel. Many people came out to travel with him or see him off. Many people from his tribe of Judah came as well as a man named Barzillai.
Barzillai was one of the wealthy leaders of Mahanaim that provided for David and his men. The king invites Barzillai to return to Jerusalem with him and promises to take care of Barzillai for the rest of his life. However Barzillai is very old (the Bible says 80) and says he wants to stay in his home till he dies. He does however ask the king to take Chimham and care for him. We are never really told who Chimham was, maybe a son or relative of Barzillai. But we are told that David agreed to take him and care for him and that Chimham went with David. Chimham isn't mentioned again. However, later in the time of the prophet Jeremiah a place is mentioned as the town or home of Chimham which was near Bethlehem, David’s home town. This leads me to believe that David provided Chimham land so that he could have a home near David’s family and that David kept his promise to Barzillai to provide for Chimham.
We can learn a lesson from King David. He never forgot to thank people who helped him. David helped Chimham in order to thank and give honor to Barzillai. We need to be sure to thank those who help and are kind to us as well.
