Genesis 1:1-31(Specifically 1:26-27)
Adam (which literally means man) was the final type of creature God made. God had spent the first 5 days of creation making the Earth and the heavens, the plants and the creatures of the sea and sky. On the sixth day, God created the animals of the land and finally; man. God spent six days creating an amazing home for man!
Adam (and mankind) was given dominion over the Earth and its creatures. The word dominion means supreme authority. That means Adam was told to be a like a king to the Earth. He was suppose to take care of it but also rule over it. This means we need to take care of the animals and nature around us, but God also intended the Earth for our use and to provide food and shelter for us. Man’s needs should come first!
Adam was created in the image of God. A picture can tell us a lot about a person. His hair color, eye color, height and other physical attributes can be clearly seen. But from a picture we don’t know his favorite color or what he likes for breakfast! This is how it is with Adam and God. Adam (or mankind) gives a glimpse of what God is like, but we must get to know Him to get a full understanding of who He is.
Activity: For this activity you will need a picture, preferably someone the children don’t know well. Have the children tell you what they know for sure about the person in the picture by looking at it. Now come up with a list of things you would have to know the person to find out. Remind them that man gives a glimpse of God but we must get to know Him personally to truly know Him!
