1 Samuel 29
When Achish, King of the Philistine city of Gath, went out to meet the Philistines for war with Israel, he expected David and his men to go with him (remember that he is allowing David and his men to live in his land and thinks they are working for him). So David and him men geared up and went along. When the Philistine leaders gathered and saw who Achish had with him they were shocked. Wasn’t this David, the great warrior of Israel? Achish tells them that David now loyally follows him. What David and his men would have really done in the battle, we will never know. The other Philistine kings refused to let David and his men go along. They didn’t trust him to fight on their side (wisely so!).
Achish is surprised, but goes and tells David to return home. Achish commends David for his loyalty but tells him that he can’t go against the other kings. So David and his men return home.
God protected David from a sticky situation. Even if David’s intent was to turn against the Philistines in the battle with Israel, some would have questioned his loyalty to his people since he showed up with the Philistines. God protects His people, sometimes from our own mistakes. He still wants the best for us, even when we aren’t always getting our actions quite right!!
Act out being David. Pretend to get ready to go to war. March (parade style) in front of the leaders. Then pretend to get sent home. Talk about whether or not you think David really would have fought with the Philistines against Israel or if he was just deceiving them.
