1 Samuel 17:57-18:4
After David killed Goliath, King Saul called him to appear before him. Saul asks David whose son he is and David replies that he is the son of Jesse from Bethlehem. Now if you think back David used to be Saul’s armor bearer and personal harp player so I don’t think he didn’t really know who David was!! Saul was getting ready to promote David to a powerful position and this was probably more about testing his character than anything else.
After this exchange between Saul and David we see how it affected Jonathan, Saul’s son. Jonathan began to love David. In other words he became Jonathan’s best friend. Jonathan and David made a covenant, which means they made special promises to each other. As a sign of this covenant Jonathan gave David his robe, armor, sword, bow and belt. Now to us that just seems like nice gifts. But for Jonathan these were symbols of his right to become the next king. Basically he was pledging to give everything he had to David. Jonathan was a really good friend! Like all good friends, he wanted the very best for his friend, even if it meant he would have to make sacrifices himself!
What makes a good friend? Have you ever needed to give something up so a friend could have something? How did it feel?
