1 Samuel 17
This is probably a familiar story. Most people have heard it before, but it never hurts to hear God’s word again! We often learn something new!
So King Saul and his army of Israelites were lined up and camped on one side of the Valley of Elah. The Philistine army was set up on the other side. The champion of the Philistines, Goliath, came out every day for 40 days and offered to fight one on one with any Israelite that was willing in order to decide the battle. Now we need to understand that Goliath was over 9 feet tall, the armor on his chest alone weighed over 100 lbs. and the head of the spear he carried weighed about 15 lbs.!! To give you some idea what 15 lbs. is, think of 2 gallons of milk! The spear he fought with was that heavy! So understandably none of the Israelites had volunteered to fight Goliath. King Saul even offered a reward to the man who defeated Goliath. He could marry the king’s daughter and never had to pay taxes again!
Now David had gone back home to help with his father, Jesse’s, sheep. But his 3 oldest brothers were in the army with Saul. Since they had been gone so long, Jesse had David take food to his brothers and their fellow soldiers and to bring back word how they were doing. After David arrived, Goliath came out for his daily challenge, however instead of being frightened like all the others, David was furious that Goliath was speaking like this to the men of God. Others heard David and told Saul, who had David come before him. David told the king not to worry that he would fight Goliath. King Saul told David that he was too young and inexperienced to fight a trained warrior like Goliath, but David argued that God had been with him when he killed a lion and a bear that tried to attack the sheep and God would be with him now. Saul agreed that he could try and offered David Saul’s own armor. But David wouldn’t use it because he wasn’t used to it. Instead he went out with his familiar weapon, a sling and 5 stones.
When David showed up to face Goliath, Goliath basically laughed! In our words he said, “How pathetic do you think I am that you send out a little pipsqueak to fight me?”
But David answered back that he was not small because he had God Almighty on his side and the battle belonged to God!! David got the first stone and put it in his sling. Then he swung it around above his head. Then he let the stone fly! And the stone hit Goliath right in the forehead and he fell flat on his face dead!! The Philistines immediately began to scatter but the men of Israel were so encouraged by David’s actions that they pursued and battled with them. David had won the day!
But why was little David able to defeat might Goliath? Because he was standing for and with God! God is all powerful and can do anything but He gives us the honor of working for Him and Him working through us! When we follow God there is nothing He wants us to do that we can’t accomplish!
Measure out 9 ft. 9 in. This is Goliath’s approximate height. Have your child try to lift 15 pounds. (2 milk jugs work) Then have them imagine throwing that while wearing over 100 lbs. of armor! Remind them that David was probably just a young man of 16 or so when he defeated mighty Goliath!
