1 Samuel 6:1-15
After the Philistines had suffered from the growths, they knew they had to return the ark but weren’t sure how. They asked some of their wise men and they said the leaders should send an offering with the ark. The wise men suggested they send 5 gold tumors and 5 gold rats. One for each of the Philistine cities. They then said to put it on a new cart pulled by two mommy cows who had never pulled a cart before. They were to put the baby cows back in the barn away from the mommies. The leaders were to hook the mommy cows to the loaded cart and set them off on their own. If the cows took the Ark back to Israel they would know it was God’s will.
But why would that show God’s will? Well, if you were a mommy cow, where would you want to go? A foreign place you’ve never been before or back to the barn with your baby? Right! The Cow’s instinct would be to go to her baby, if she didn’t then some higher power was in charge!
So what do you think the cows did? They took the cart all the way back to Israel! God was in charge so He took the Ark back where it belonged!! The leaders of the Philistines followed along to see what would happen. When the cart arrived at the area called Beth Shemesh, the Israelites were reaping their wheat and saw it arrive. The Levites went out and took the Ark off the cart along with the golden offerings. They then built a fire with the cart and offered the cows as a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord. The Ark was returned!! The leaders of the Philistines returned home knowing they had done the right thing.
When we do something wrong we have to make it right. Sometimes that is just an apology. Sometimes we need to give something back or sometimes we may need to do something for the person. But we always need to make a situation right when we hurt someone.
Role play with your child ways to make something right.
