When Naomi and Ruth got to Bethlehem, everyone was excited. They were asking is this really Naomi come back? But Naomi (whose name means “pleasant” or “lovely”) told them not to call her Naomi anymore but Mara. Mara means “bitter.” Why would she want to be called “bitter?” Well, how would you feel if your whole family had died? Naomi is feeling very sad. Sometimes when bad things happen we get so busy thinking about the bad we forget to see the good. Yes, Naomi’s husband and sons died. But now she is home in Bethlehem and everyone is glad to see her. She also has her daughter-in-law, Ruth, who loves her and wants to be with her.
We need to be careful not to forget our blessings and focus on only the bad. We need to be thankful for the good and not decide to be “bitter” like Naomi!!
Make a family tree. Talk about the people who have gone on before us, but also talk about all the family you still have and maybe imagine who might get added to your tree someday. Take a few minutes to thank God for all the people in your life and those yet to come!
