After Boaz married Ruth they had a son named Obed. Now according to Jewish tradition Obed was considered to be the son of Ruth’s first husband, Mahlon, and thus the grandson of Naomi. After his birth all the women of Bethlehem rejoiced with Naomi because she now had a grandson to provide for her. Obed would inherit everything belonging to Naomi’s husband, Elimelech, and use it to provide for his family. This is a strange tradition to us, but in this time it was how God provided for widows. Ruth and Boaz would still love and care for Obed, he was just legally the heir of Naomi’s family. Ruth and Boaz cared for Naomi until Obed was old enough to take over. Because Ruth and Boaz were godly people, they would have cared for Naomi anyway, but this gave legal protection for others.
Obed, however, was going to go on to be remembered as more than the grandson of Naomi. Obed had a son and named him Jesse. Jesse had a son and named him David. Yes, Obed’s grandson was the mighty King David! Ruth, Boaz and Obed are the godly ancestors of King David, who is the ancestor of Jesus!! All these godly examples were leading up to the ultimate example, Jesus!
How do we take care of the elderly today? Talk about how our nation cares for those who don’t have family to help them. (If you or your parents are currently caring for relatives, talk about that) Consider visiting a nursing home to show love to lonely elders.
