Abimelech was one of Gideon’s many sons. His mother was from a town called Shechem. It was in the area of Israel but it is believed that many who lived in Shechem were not Israelites but Canaanites. After Gideon died, Abimelech decided to seize power in Israel but he knew that to do that he would need to eliminate the competition, his brothers.
So he went to the men of Shechem and convinced them it would be better for them to have a relative as a ruler than the other sons of Gideon. They gave him money and hired mercenaries to help him. They went and killed all the sons of Gideon on one rock. In other words they didn’t fight in a war, they rounded them up and murdered them. But the youngest, Jotham, escaped. After the sons of Gideon were dead, the men of Shechem made Abimelech king.
When Jotham found out, he went to a high place, where he could be heard, and told the men of Shechem a parable. Then he told them that if they had treated Gideon’s sons fairly then they should rejoice and all would be well. But if not, then he wished evil to befall them through Abimelech.
After 3 years, God stirred up ill-will among the men of Shechem and they turned to a man named Gaal. Gaal and his men began a war with Abimelech. Eventually the city of Shechem was destroyed and Abimelech was killed by having a woman drop a large stone on his head from a tower!! Their sins were eventually punished, as they always are!
Abimelech, with the support of the men of Shechem, committed a horrible sin. It may not be immediate, but there is always a price to be paid when we sin.
Has it ever seemed like someone you know got away with doing something bad? Do you think they really did? Remember that God sees everything, but we don’t. They probably paid a price you never saw or will in the future. Trust God to take care of it. He knows best!!
