After the confirmation with the fleece, Gideon was ready to take his army and defeat the Midianites. There were 32,000 men gathered for Israel. But God told Gideon that was too many. God said that if they went into battle and won with that many they might believe it was their own strength, not the power of God. So God told Gideon to tell the men that anyone who was afraid could leave. 22,000 men packed up and left. Now don’t be too hard on these guys, they weren’t cowards. They were there to fight even though they were afraid. That was pretty brave, but they were honest enough to say they had some fear. So Gideon released them.
So now they are down to 10,000 men. But God said that is still too many, so He told Gideon to take the men to the water to drink. When they got there, God told Gideon to choose those men who lapped water out of their hands and reject those who got down on their knees. Many people believe God was showing Gideon his soldiers that stayed constantly alert. Well, Gideon separated them out and he only had 300 men left!!! But Gideon obediently released all the men except the 300. Now I don’t know about you, but I would have been a lot more confident going into that battle with 10,000 rather than 300, but Gideon knew that with God on his side he could win all alone but if he went against God he would lose with a million! So Gideon and his 300 men prepared to fight for Israel knowing they had God on their side!
Get 100 grains of rice, beans, marshmallows, etc. Tell your kids that each one represents 100 men. Then have them pull out just 3 to show how small a group God narrowed it down to. (If you want you could start with 320 of something and narrow twice) Remind them it isn’t the size of the army that matters, but the size of our God!!
