After Gideon destroyed Baal’s altar, he felt a much stronger presence of the Lord. He began calling up the Israelites to go defeat the Midianites and Amalekites that were ruling over them. But he wanted to be very sure that he was the one God wanted to lead. So he asked God for a sign.
The first night Gideon laid a piece of fleece on the threshing floor. He asked God that if Gideon was the one He wanted to use then please let the fleece be wet but the ground dry in the morning. Now normally either the dew falls and everything is wet or it doesn’t and everything is dry. So for one to be wet and the other dry would be unusual. So the next morning the fleece was wet but the ground was dry. Gideon had his sign.
But Gideon wanted to be very sure, so the next night he asked God, to please not be angry but if he really was to be the leader let the fleece be dry and the ground wet. Now that would be really unusual because usually fleece soaks up all moisture around it, so dry fleece on wet ground would definitely be a miracle! The next morning, the fleece was dry but the ground was wet. Gideon knew he was to be the leader!
It is okay to ask God to confirm something he asks you to do. I John 4:1 tells us to test spirits to be sure they are from God. Just don’t keep asking for confirmations to delay doing what God said. Once you are sure, delaying is disobedience!! And God is never happy about that!!
You will need 2 washcloths or paper towels, 2 cotton balls and 2 plates. Before bed:
Take 1 washcloth and lay it dry on a plate. Soak one cotton ball and set it in the middle. This is your first fleece.
Take the other washcloth and get it wet. Set it on a plate and set a dry cotton ball on top. This is your second fleece.
In the morning see what is wet and what is dry. I doubt you will have anything completely dry by morning!! Remind the kids that Gideon’s results were miracles to prove he was called by God. What you got is what we would expect to happen!!
