The night after the angel informed Gideon that God was going to use him to save Israel, God gave him his first assignment. God told Gideon to take a bull and go tear down the altar to Baal and the image beside it. Baal and the image represented a false god that the Israelites were worshiping instead of the one true God. He was to then build an altar to God and sacrifice the bull on it. So Gideon took 10 servants from among his servants and did as God said. But since he was afraid of what the Israelites might do, he did it at night.
The next morning the men of the city see what has been done and they go looking for who has done it. They discover that Gideon has destroyed the altar of Baal so they go to his father, Joash, and tell him to send out Gideon. But Joash asks them if they need to save Baal? He then basically tells them that if Baal is really a god, why doesn’t he deal with Gideon himself? The men must have realized how silly they were being and they left Gideon alone. Gideon had begun what was needed to turn the people back to God.
It is easy to see a big statue and know that it is wrong to worship that instead of God. But sometimes we put other, less obvious, things in front of God. We need to be careful not to let anything in our lives be more important than God. When we realize we are “worshiping” something else, we need to be like Gideon and get rid of it!!
As a family discuss if you are putting anything ahead of God. Is there something you routinely miss church to do? Is it becoming more important than God? Make sure that you as a family aren’t worshiping an idol. If you are, recommit yourselves to God and develop a strategy to put your idol back in its place!!
