Shamgar is the first of what are called the minor judges. They are called minor because there is not much information about them. There is only 1 verse about Shamgar. We don’t know if the writer didn’t consider them as important as some of the others, their stories were less interesting or they had forgotten much else. All we know about Shamgar is that he came after Ehud, he used an ox goad to kill 600 Philistines and he delivered Israel. Now personally I think anyone who can kill 600 men with a wood pole with a sharpened metal end is pretty special. And the fact that he delivered Israel is no minor feat either! So being a “minor” judge is still a pretty big deal. The most important thing for us to remember when we read about these “minor” people in God’s word is that, to God, anyone who faithfully follows His word is majorly important!! By having faith and doing God’s will you are major in His book, whether anyone else ever thinks so or not. Personally, I would rather be major in God’s book than any book, encyclopedia or newspaper man has ever written. How about you?
Think of 3 people who are “major” new right now in our world. How many of them are “major” news in God’s eyes?
