After the Israelites had dealt with Achan’s sin, God told them to attack and destroy Ai. God promised to give the city over to them. So Joshua sent 30,000 soldiers around to the other side of the city during the night. Then Joshua led the others against the city. Once the soldiers of Ai began to fight with them, the Israelites pretended to retreat. The soldiers of Ai followed them thinking they would destroy them. But it was a trick! When the soldiers of Ai left the city undefended, the 30,000 soldiers that Joshua had sent out attacked from behind and destroyed the city. Then the rest of the Israelites turned back to fight the men of Ai, trapping them between the 2 Israelite forces. The Israelites completely destroyed the Army of Ai!! Afterward, they collected all the spoils for themselves.
Now you are probably saying “wait a minute, didn’t Achan get in trouble for that in Jericho?!?” And you are right. But in Jericho God told them not to collect the spoils while at Ai He told them that the spoils were theirs. Taking spoils wasn’t itself a sin; disobeying God was Achan’s sin. This time the people of Israel followed exactly what God said and everything went according to plan. Sometimes what we are doing isn’t itself a sin, but we are sinning because we were told not to do it. For example, if your mom tells you not to watch TV until after your chores and homework are done but you watch before your homework you are committing the sin of disobedience. Watching TV is not a sin. In fact if you had waited till the right time there wouldn’t be a problem at all. But if you disobey your parent’s instructions, that is sin because the Bible says to honor your mother and father. Remember just because what you are doing is not a sin itself, it does not make it right. We must follow the rules laid out for us by those God had placed in authority over us!
