When it came time to conquer Jericho, the Lord had very unusual instructions. Seven priest were to take trumpets of ram’s horn, blow them, and march around the city. Behind them was to be a group of priests carrying the Ark. In front of the trumpets was the armed men and behind the ark was the rear guard. They were to march around the city one time, completely silent except for the trumpets. They did exactly that on the first day. And then the second day, and the third. They continued on the fourth, fifth and sixth days. Then early on the seventh day they got up and began marching. But on the seventh day they didn’t go around once, but 7 times. Then on the seventh round, as the trumpets blew, they broke their silence and shouted. So what happened next? The wall fell completely down flat! Now remember, this was not a six foot fence. This was a wall that the spies had to be let down with a rope from and thick enough for people to live in!! And the Bible says it fell flat!
After the wall fell, the Israelites went in and destroyed everyone who lived in Jericho, except Rehab and her family (the spies kept their promise!) But for their very first victory in the Promised Land the people did not have to fight a great battle, just follow God’s orders and a miracle came. Once again God provided exactly what His people needed and when they followed his plan everything went perfect!
Act out the march of Jericho. You may want to build a tower of blocks to walk around. Remember, once for each of six days, then seven times (a total of 13 times!) Remember to be silent until the last time around. Remind your kids at the end that God always provides even if the way is unusual!
