Joshua 14:6-15; 15:13-19
Do you remember Caleb? He and Joshua were the only ones of the 12 men who came back and told Moses they could conquer the land. Because of their faithfulness God promised that they would survive the wilderness and be the only ones to get to live in the Promised Land. Well the day has arrived!! Caleb is now 85 years old and he goes to Joshua to receive his inheritance. Caleb is a member of the tribe of Judah so he is given the city of Hebron which falls within Judah’s borders. This was a special place because Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had lived there at some points in their lives. Abraham had built an altar there and many special people were buried there as well. Caleb went in and completely removed all the native peoples because as Joshua 14:14 says “he wholly followed the Lord God of Israel.”
Caleb was rewarded for his faithfulness. He did not become famous like Joshua and he had to wait 45 years, but he did receive his promised inheritance. God always keeps his promises and he blesses us when we are obedient to his word!!
Talk about faithfulness is often its own reward. How following God’s “rules” protects us (and others) from pain and hurt and leads to a better life for everyone. Talk about what life would be like if everyone followed God’s commands.
