By this time Moses is very old. God tells him to go up on the mountain to see the land that the Israelites are about to conquer before he dies. Moses will not be allowed to enter the Promised Land because he did not follow God’s instructions exactly at Meribah. But Moses asks God to appoint a leader for the people before he dies. Moses doesn’t want the people to be like sheep without a shepherd. So God has Moses appoint Joshua as the people’s next leader. Moses takes Joshua before the priest (Eleazar) and performs a ceremony to show that Joshua will be his successor.
This is important for us today because God never leaves us without leadership. God wants us to have someone to go to for guidance and to help us when we struggle. We also need to show respect for our leaders. We should speak to them with kindness and listen to what they say. Sometimes one leader leaves and God brings us a new leader. Has your church ever changed pastors? We need to be sure to show the new person just as much respect as the old one. They are the person God has given us to follow and we need to treat them with honor and respect.
Talk about who the spiritual leaders are in your church. (Pastors, teachers, etc.) Make a card for at least one of them thanking them for their service!
