As the book of Joshua begins, Moses has just died making Joshua the leader of the Israelites. God now tells Joshua that it is time to enter the Promised Land. Verse 4 describes the borders to include from the Mediterranean (the Great Sea) to the Euphrates, to Lebanon and the wilderness that they have wandered in. God has a specific land laid out for them and it is time to take it! God proceeds to give a group of promises and instructions. First God gives a promise to Joshua:
No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Joshua 1:5
God also tells Joshua to “be strong and of good courage.” This was so important that God said it 4 times in this chapter, verses 6, 7, 9 and 18! God reminds Joshua (and the Israelites) to follow the law and not to turn from it. Finally He promises to be with them where ever they go.
But what does this have to do with us? Well since we have become God’s chosen people through Christ, the promises God made to His people (the Israelites) apply to us as well. So when God promises never to leave them or forsake them that applies to us. When He promises to go with them where ever they go, that applies to us! His commands also apply to us. So when God tells us the same thing 4 times in one chapter, we probably should pay attention!! He said “Be strong and of good courage,” but what does that mean? That means to keep doing what we know is right. Even when it feels hard, scary and unpopular. We need to keep doing our best knowing He is right there with us helping us with each step!
What is something that you are supposed to do but is hard for you to do? Is it something that will get easier as you do it more? Does it help to know God is with you while you do it? Pray for God’s help to get through hard things!
