Numbers 25 (I do not recommend reading this with children)
Now God had not allowed his people to be cursed by Balaam (Numbers 24) but they were still tempted into sin. While they were in the area of Moab some of the people began to worship the false gods of the Moabites and the Midianites. They also started to commit others sins with the people. So the Lord became angry and told them to kill those who were leading the people astray and he sent a plague. While they were preparing to do this, a man named Zimri strutted by on his way to sin and showed no remorse for his behavior. Phinehas, who was the son of the chief priest, was outraged by this behavior. So he took a javelin (like a spear) and follow Zimri. When Phinehas caught Zimri and a woman named Cozbi committing sin he stabbed both of them with the javelin and killed them!! This action stopped the plague and God promised Phinehas that he and his decedents would be the priests forever more.
God was not so much pleased by Phinehas killing the 2 people but that he took action to stop sin among the people. That Phinehas cared enough about what was right to stand up and do something. There are times when we must stand up for what is right. Where we must remind others what God’s word says. We must be careful not to do this in a way that is revenge oriented but should do what we can to lovingly correct those who are wrong, especially when they are leading others to do wrong as well.
Can you think of a situation that you should stand up for what is right? (Talk through with your child appropriate ways to stand up in this and other situations. Help them develop guidelines of when to stand up, when to seek authority and when to keep quiet and pray.)
