Now as the Israelites traveled in the wilderness they wanted to go through, rather than around, the land of Edom. (Edom was a descendant of Esau). Moses approached the king and asked if they could pass through the land. He promised that they would stick to the road and not harm anyone or anything along the way. But the king of Edom not only said no, he threatened to make war on them if they did! Moses then restated his offer and promised that they would pay for anything that they did use or damage. The king was still adamant in his refusal. So the Israelites turned and went around.
Unfortunately life is like this sometimes. Some people don’t want anything to do with God and his people. The Israelites could have become angry at the rejection and retaliated, but they didn’t. They respected the king’s choice and moved on. Sometimes people reject us for no good reason but we need to show godly character by being respectful of their decisions and being willing to move on. The rejection hurts but we need to forgive, and keep doing what is right. If they are rejecting God, we should pray they will have a change of heart, but we should never retaliate and do something hurtful because then we are making God sad!!
Have you ever been rejected? How did it make you feel? What did you do? What should you have done? What will you do next time?
Role play being rejected. Act out you child asking someone to do something and being rejected. Practice how to respond with respect.
