Moses had a very special relationship with God. God spoke to Moses the way we talk to each other. Moses had a special tent that he went into to talk with God. Do you have a special place you like to pray? Sometimes we think God just picks special people to talk to, like Moses or maybe our pastor. But do you know that He will gladly talk to any of us? Maybe not in the out loud, one on one way He did with Moses but He does talk to us. So why did God have such a special relationship with Moses? Because Moses wanted it!
In Exodus 33 Moses records his conversation with God. Moses tells God that he doesn’t want to go anywhere God doesn’t go with them. Moses also asks to see God’s glory. What does that mean? It means that Moses wanted God to show Moses what makes God who He is! And you know what, God did! Why? Because Moses was important? No! Because Moses wanted to know God! God showed Moses part of his physical form that few (if any) other living men have ever seen, not because Moses was special, but because he had a desire to know God.
God then calls Moses back up on Mount Sinai to get a new set of tablets with the commandments on them. Moses spent another 40 days and nights with God. God revealed more about Himself to Moses. After that, He discussed making a new covenant with the people and that He will show them wonders that have never been done as well as driving out the people who are living in the land God has for them. God revealed some specific rules and then Moses returned to the people.
When Moses came down off the mountain, his face literally glowed from being with God! Do you think that would be cool? To have been so close with God people could see it on your face? The Israelites found it kind of scary. So he had to wear a veil when he was with the people, but he took it off to be with God. So which would you rather be, a Moses that was so close to God that you could see it on his face, or a child of Israel that wanted to know about God but not get too close? The choice is yours. You can be as close to God as you want to be. I challenge you to be a Moses!!!
Talk about what makes a good friend. Remember that God wants to be your best friend, but you have to be good friend on your side for there to be a good relationship!
Talk about ways to get closer to God. For example: reading His word, prayer and doing His will. Come up with one thing you as a family can commit to do to get closer to God in the next week.
Pray together for 15 minutes each day
Memorize a verse together
Read a passage of scripture each day (Psalms, Proverbs and the Gospels work well for kids)
