The Israelites were complainers!! There is no doubt about it. They complained about food so God gave them manna, now they are complaining about water! They complain to Moses that he needs to give them water. They say he brought them into the desert just so they and their livestock can die of thirst! In my opinion they have a flair for the dramatic. Why would anyone bring their own people out of slavery just to let them die on purpose? Moses then calls out to God for help because he is afraid the people may try to kill him!
What is the big problem going on here? The people have stopped relying on God and started thinking Moses is their provider. They expect Moses to give them water, but they have forgotten that Moses is just God’s instrument. They should have stepped back and looked at all the miracles that God had done, calmly prayed for God to meet their current need, and then expected God to come through in His time.
But how often are we like the children of Israel? Do you ever lose focus on who is your provider and look to someone else to get something for you? There is nothing wrong with working to get something or asking for it for your birthday. The problem is when we forget the source of where all things come, God. Be sure to check with Him first about how you should get something you need!
By the way, the children of Israel did get their water. God told Moses to hit a rock with his staff and water gushed forth. God is in the miracle business and He provides what we need, we just need to remember where it comes from and trust Him to provide!
Parents, talk to your children about a time when God worked things out in an unexpected way for your good.
