Mary was a young girl in Nazareth. We know that she was pledged to marry Joseph. We are told in Luke 1:26 that she was visited by the angel Gabriel. Gabriel had amazing news! First he tells her that she is highly favored and blessed among women. Like most of us, Mary was a little afraid when an angel appeared! But Gabriel tells her not to be afraid and then goes on to tell her that she will have a son and that he will be called the Son of the Highest and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. In other words, she is going to be the mother of the Messiah (or savior)! Mary is understandably confused how this will happen but the angel explains that it will happen through the power of the Holy Spirit. Gabriel then goes on to tell Mary that nothing is impossible and uses her cousin Elizabeth (who is expecting herself) as an example. Mary then submits to God’s will.
Mary then travels to see her cousin that the angel has told her about. When Mary arrives, Elizabeth is overcome by the Holy Spirit and confirms what Mary has been told and encourages her. Mary then proceeds to speak a passage of praise that we now call the Magnificat. This passage worships God and reminds us that God often uses people that the world considers unimportant, (like Mary). Mary then spends 3 months with her cousin, Elizabeth. I firmly believe God had Mary spend this time with Elizabeth so that Elizabeth could help Mary understand what was to come and to be encouraged by someone who understood God’s plan.
I personally find Mary’s story inspiring. She shows us that God will use any willing heart, no matter how insignificant the world thinks they are. Mary was a young girl, from a small town and from all the Biblical evidence she was socially unimportant. But when Gabriel told her God’s plan, she willingly agreed. After that, God provided her with all the support and encouragement she needed in the form of Elizabeth. God not only gives us tasks but provides what we need to do them!
Provide a small task for each child to do. It can be a puzzle, art project or small cleaning project. Provide all the supplies they will need to do it and plan a treat for afterward. Remind them that God gives tasks to those who are willing, he provides what we need to do them and there are eternal rewards for those who follow his plan!!
