Hagar was the Egyptian maid of Sarai (Sarah), the wife of Abram. Today a maid is an employee that is paid to clean but in those days it was more like a personal slave. Hagar really had no choice in what she was told to do. She couldn't just leave and go get another job. So when Sarai decided that Hagar was to have a child for her, she didn't really have a choice.
So Hagar did what she was told and she got pregnant. Well, she had followed orders so everything should be okay, right? Wrong! Hagar felt like she was better than her mistress because she could have a child and Sarai couldn't. Sarai was jealous for the same reason. What a mess! But it got worse. Sarai decided to be mean to Hagar. So Hagar ran away. Now neither person is acting very Godly here but God is going to step in and help out any way!
When Hagar stopped for water the Angel of the Lord met her and asked her what she was doing. She told him she was fleeing her mistress. The Angel told her to go back and do her duty. That the Lord was going to bless her child. That he would be the father of a multitude of people.
God saw Hagar in her misery and promised to bring good from it. God can take our bad situations and the messes we make and bring good from them when we get back on His path and follow Him!
Act out Hagar fleeing from her mistress. Talk about what you would take and then have one child be Hagar. When they stop for water have someone else be the Angel. Then act out her headed back to her home. Remind your child that God always has a plan to make things work for our good!
