Topic: God's provision
Hagar had given birth to Abraham's son Ishmael but now Sarah has had Isaac. Sarah doesn't like having Ishmael and Hagar around because she wants her son to have all the focus and if Sarah and Abraham had waited on the Lord he would have. But they were impatient and now they have a constant reminder of their lack of faith. Sarah tells Abraham to send them away. He is reluctant to do that because Ishmael is his son too, but God tells him to go ahead. God reminds Abraham that the blessings He has promised will come through Isaac.
But what about poor Hagar and Ishmael? God reminds Abraham that He will care for them so Abraham gives them food and water and sends them out. How would you feel if you were Hagar? They have lived in relative comfort and now, turned out with just basic provisions. But it got worse. They traveled until they ran out of water. At that point Hagar gives up. She sets the boy under a bush and goes a little distance from him so she doesn't have to watch him die. She has given up all hope and begins to cry.
But wait! The Angel of the Lord shows up and tells her not to fear because God heard Ishmael crying out. Suddenly there is a well and water to drink! God told her to give the boy water and reminded her of His promise to make Ishmael a great nation.
Hagar had forgotten the most important thing: Always go to God! God is always ready to meet our needs we just need to turn to Him and remember what He has promised us.
What is something you feel like you need right now? Have you been trying to figure out how to get it on your own? Take a few moments to discuss things you may be in need of and pray for those needs.
