Genesis 12:1-15:21 (Specifically 12:1-3, 14:19-20, 15:5-6)
After the flood Shem, Ham and Japeth had many children to repopulate the
Earth. One of the descendants of Shem was Abram. When Abram was 75
years old God told him to leave his land and family and God would make
him a great nation that would bless all the families of the Earth. (Genesis
12:1-3). The Lord also promised to bless Abram and those who were good
to him and bring bad to those who were mean to him.
But why did God choose Abram? Genesis 15:5-6 tells us that God made
Abram a promise and because Abram believed Him, He counted it as
righteousness (or good behavior). Hebrews 11:8 says that by faith Abram
obeyed when God told him to leave his home. So basically, God choose
Abram because he would believe (or have faith) in God. God knew Abram
would do what he was told to do and follow God with his whole heart.
Because Abram was obedient and faithful, God not only blessed Abram but
through him came Jesus Christ who blessed all of us!! God can and will
use one faithful man (or woman).
Now that doesn't mean Abram didn't make mistakes. In Genesis 12:10-20
Abram lies to the Pharaoh of Egypt out of fear. But overall, Abram did his
best to follow God's will and because of this God made him a great man
and the father of God's special people. What might God do with your life if
you are obedient and faithful?
