Genesis 1:26-27, 2:20-24, 3:16
1. Eve was also in the image of God. In Genesis 1:26 God said “let us make man in Our image” but in Genesis 1:27 it says He created them male and female. This tells us that to give us a clearer image of who God is, He created both men and women to demonstrate different aspects of who He is.
2. Eve was meant to be Adams helper. In Genesis 2:20-23 we see that Adam had named all the animals but no suitable companion had been found. So God created woman from man. And in Genesis 3:16 we are told that the husband shall rule over the wife. But does that mean women are inferior to men? NO! Both men and women are created in the image of God and given dominion over the Earth, so they are equal. However, they have different roles. Have you ever been on a team with no leader? Everyone has ideas of what to do but there is no one to decide what to do! Every team needs a leader and that is the role of the man in the family. But every good leader listens to his team and makes decisions based on the good of the team. The woman’s job on the team is to give her ideas, work with her team toward achieving the goals of the team and support her leader.
3. Should women ever be leaders? Understanding the role of women in the family should not be confused with understanding women’s role in the world. While a woman should follow the Godly leading of her husband in her family, the Bible does show women in positions of political and social leadership and it should not be assumed that because women aren’t the leader at home, they should never lead!
Activity suggestion: Have your family try to perform a task without anyone leading. Any time someone starts to lead, like suggest a vote, start a task, etc., remind them they are to do it without anyone leading. It should fall into chaos. Thus showing that there needs to be a leader, even if for just a few moments, and they are taking turns leading, someone always leads!
